Grab a box of cake mix and frosting to make these delicious chocolate covered cake bites - a perfect Valentine's Day treat!
You might hear me say that about all kinds of desserts and treats ... but I really like the bites of cakes. It was not until the end of my "adulthood" that I had my first bite of cake and after that first bite, I knew I had to learn to make them myself!
The first few times I made them, I didn't know that I could have so many feelings of hatred for melted chocolate. I was making such a mess, dripping everywhere, bites of cakes that were half covered with chocolate and looked more like porridge.
Ingredients
- 1 can of cake mix;
- as well as any additional ingredients according to the instructions
- 1 container of frosting
- candies melt or almond bark
- food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- Make the cake according to the directions on the box. If you want the bite-size portion of the cake to be of a certain color, add a little food coloring to the dough and mix well before pouring it into an ovenproof dish.
- Once the cake is cooked and completely cooled, crumble it into small pieces in a large mixing bowl. You can also use a fork to break up larger pieces.
- Add about 3/4 of the frosting, mixing thoroughly with a spoon or spatula.
- Place the cake mix in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes so that it is easier to form balls.
- Form the cake mix into golf ball-sized bites and place on a baking sheet lined with waxed paper. Place the bites in the freezer for about an hour until they are firm.
- To make the chocolate coating, melt the almond bark or the melted candies according to the packaging in a microwave-safe bowl. Place a bite of cake in the bowl and use a spoon to coat it completely. Return to waxed paper to harden the chocolate.
- If you want to add drops of color to the cake bites, heat a little frosting in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds. It will become liquid and you can use a spoon to sprinkle it over the cake bites.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator and enjoy!
